I recently received a call from a man who had been the victim of a pernicious, cruel scam. He was notified that he had won 5.5 million dollars in the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes. He was repeatedly told by the person who called him that this wasn’t a scam that he had really won. Arrangements were made for him to meet to receive a check at his local airport with pictures to be taken. Through this process he was told he had to pay a $2400 gift tax fee, in order to receive the check. It had to be paid by cash through UPS to an address in South Carolina. Overwhelmed with excitement and constantly contacted by the “representative,” he was convinced he had really won. Once he sent the money, he had second thoughts. He called the “representative” and there was no answer – and his $2400 was gone.

One of the latest scams is to use a computer generated voice, asking you to identify your self, (recording) they want to get you to say the word yes, and they continue asking for various key phrases seeking personally identifiable information this could be a bill collector or an illegal criminal enterprise. Never give any information out where you did not call the company up, (never return a caller ID because you don't know who your really calling) I always find a public published phone number ask for identification, which any legitimate company will provide.
